SOUL-LIFT DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH DR D M TIKILI
DATE: Wednesday, 3 May 2023.
DEVOTIONAL READING: Ezra 5
KEY VERSE: Ezra “ Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zachariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.” (Ezra 5:1).
TOPIC: Relying on the Word of God.
The best way to judge preaching is not by how eloquent or clever the words sound, but by whose words they are. Are they God’s?
Zechariah (together with Haggai) prophesied during the period of time when the Jews of Jerusalem were trying to rebuild their city. Catcalls from the neighbours had slowed the people down, so Zechariah’s message was clear and forceful: keep building! It’s what God wants! You can do it!
Too determined to let a little opposition spoil the Jews’ resolve to finish what God had called them to do, Zechariah encouraged and helped the people. It made a big difference, too. The people listened to the words and were stirred to take action.
Common sense and experience-based wisdom have their place, but there’s no substitute for the Word of God.
Put another way, sometimes we get discouraged unnecessarily. We hear bad news, or face a setback, or think that all is lost, and we want to give up. We want to quit. We feel hopeless.
A good friend offers a reminder:
God is still alive.
His ways are going to prevail.
Nothing is impossible with God.
Don’t let your friends and family members lose sight of the hope that we have an eternal, all-powerful and loving God.
